it has been six months and more than 100 rallies since the president officially kicked off his reelection efforts. slow economic recovery and a poor performance in the first presidential debate left the campaign in a virtual tie in the final weeks. but as the election wore on the president continued to rack up key electoral votes and shortly after 11 p.m. eastern time, it was ohio that put obama over the top and a state that became ground zero for both candidates in the phenyl hours of the campaign. -- final hours of the campaign. for mitt rom mi it was bitter disappointment but in a concession speech to supporters in boston he conveyed a message of university the in defeat. >> i so wish it's been able to fulfill your hopes to lead your country in a different direction but the nation chose another leader and ann and i join with you to pray for him and this great nation. >> reporter: the president says he looks forward to working with the former opponent.

>> the weeks ahead i look forward to sitting down with governor romney where we can work together to move the country forward. >> reporter: the president in the victory speech took a bipartisan tone saying americans voted for action and not politics as usual but again keep in mine, this is a democratic president who will be dealing with a house that is run by republicans and a senate run by democrats and again the same setup facing the same divisions we have seen over the last four years. that's the latest from chicago. >> the race we had our ice on voters had major initiatives to decide on. >> this morning the results are in and our state is making history. sherrie johnson is live in federal hill with the outcome of question 6 and a lot of the nation was watching how maryland would vote. >> reporter: there are a lot of eyes on maryland and maryland made history as we voted to make same sex marriage legal in this state. it's a question that has been defeated each of the 32 times

it had been on the ballot in other states. maryland is now the 7th state in addition to the district of columbia to approve marriage equality. voting on question 6 came when supporters argued that same sex marriage is is a civil right and that children of same sex couples key serve -- deserved to be raised by parents married. it doesn't force clergy to perform marriage ceremonies many religious organizations are not required to participate in the ceremonies. opponents of question 6 collected more than double the number of signatures required to push it too a referendum. now maryland is the first state to legalize same sex marriage through a ballot referendum. local courts can begin issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples in january. and same sex marriage was approved in maine. reporting live in federal hill,sherrie johnson, abc2 news. blackjack and expanding gaming conto the -- coming to the state. voters approved question 7 and this morning christian schaffer
